WAITING FOR KINKY BOOTS ITALY: INTERVIEW WITH SIMON-ANTHONY RHODEN, LOLA IN THE UK SHOW

It is true, we are in the height of the summer, but how can we come back happily from holidays? For Italian musical’s lovers, there is no doubt: Autumn brings one of the most exciting debuts: the Italian version of Kinky Boots, directed by Claudio Insegno.

Kinky Boots, based on the 2005 movie, tells the story of Charlie Price, who has inherited a nearly bankrupted shoe factory from his father. Charlie has to come up with a brilliant plan to keep his factory afloat. A chance meeting with drag queen Lola ends in an idea to keep the doors open: fabulous heels for women who just happen to be men. What Lola wants is “two-and-a-half feet of irresistible tubular sex” that won’t break under her body weight.

The 1980’s pop icon Cyndi Lauper-penned musical, with book by Harvey Fierstein, opened in Broadway in 2013. The production earned 6 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Score.

In 2015 it opened in London, surpassing its rivals with audiences in weekly box office gross.

While the Italian version of this stunning musical is on its way, we have interviewed Simon-Anthony Rhoden, who is Lola the amazing drag-queen on the stage of the Adelphi Theatre in London.

How did you become familiar with the character of Lola?

When I first read for the character Lola it spoke to me as a person as well as an actor. The journey she goes on and the story I get to tell really connected with me. I became familiar with it also because I was fortunate enough to watch the role be played by Matt Henry every night as I started as a swing/understudy on Kinky Boots UK. I always wondered how I’d play the part if ever I got the chance.

Did you know the film before studying the musical?

I knew nothing about the show or the film until I had to audition for it. I remember always meaning to go watch the film but never making the time. But once I got the call, I did as much research as I possibly could. I think that Chiwetel Ejiofor’s interpretation of the character is brilliant. In the beginning of my journey playing the role I would often go back and refer to the movie if I was feeling unsure about a particular scene or action. The only difference is, the stage is a completely different beast to the screen and so something that is played/read for screen will not always be seen/read from the stage. But it is always good to have a little inspiration.

Lola is a powerful role. How crucial is a powerful voice like yours when playing this part?

It is not crucial to have a big voice like mine at all. It is crucial to be able to sing the songs however, as they were written that way for a reason. But whoever plays the role of Lola should do their own interpretation of the role as well as remembering to always look for the truth in it. The character is written so well and so an actor shouldn’t be scared of the complexities within the role.

What’s the meaning of Kinky Boots today?

The meaning of Kinky Boots today transcends the LGBTQ community in that everyone can learn from this show no matter what walk of life. The key message is “You change the world when you change your mind” and that is something we can all practice and remind ourselves everyday.

Do you have any suggestions, any pieces of advice for your Italian colleague who will be playing the part next Autumn?

My advice is don’t be afraid of your own interpretation of this role. It is written so well that all you need to do is be truthful, tell the story and have fun. I also like to use some of my own childhood DIVAS as inspiration too, so whoever they were to you growing up, use them!

In London Kinky Boots is closing soon. What are your new projects?

There are a few projects in the pipe line but as nothing is confirmed and cannot speak about that. I do think it is sad that Kinky Boots UK is closing as I would like to think that a show like this would stand the test of time, especially in its home in the west end.
